Sheesh

Eliza's a little peanut. Yesterday, we stared at each other for a full five minutes or so. It was amazing to see how alert she is. I can't wait until she is a little bit older so we can start baby sign language.

While we're on the subject, what do people think about baby sign language? I know it seems to be a big deal these days, but I love the concept of being able to communicate with my child so early. I'll let you know how it works out in a few months!

  1. I think teaching infants to sign is so cool! My sister-in-law did it with my niece and it was amazing. I have started with Nathan, but haven't been too consistent, so I need to re-commit to that. And we use Baby Einstein- they work miracles, they really do. But some people have strong opinions about babies and television.

  2. I'm not sure. I'm a little torn. I think it's great to teach them a form of communicating early and it's something that you can keep doing with them. Which would be an obvious benefit later on. At the same time though, that's the language they are learning and they don't usually speak the words they are trying to get them to say. Of course, I'm not the expert. Then there is the Ellie example. They taught her sign and at first they had a really hard time getting her to SAY the words. But just listen to her NOW! Haha. She has a great vocabulary. So, yeah, I'm not sure.

  3. It helps her develop language. Do it. It won't hurt her language development at all. Plus, it's so cute to see little kids using sign language
My nephew with PDD-NOS learned "more" and "eat." It was fun. (And the only way he could communicate.)

  4. i am mixed on it too because most kids i know speak a lot later because they use the sign instead. So i did not do it with Jackie and she was my little talker since 6 months so who knows i doubt i will do it with Abby because i want her to talk early like Jackie :)

  5. I think it's amazing! My sister-in-law has done it with all of her kids and it actually helped them speak sooner. They learn the concept of asking for something they need sooner, and makes life easier for her because her kids don't fuss and fuss while you guess what they need. I think it's super awesome and super cute.

  6. I love it! I started doing simple signs with Jade when she was six months old. She is now about 7 1/2 months and can understand things like milk, more, eat. I'm excited for her to start doing it on her own. I've heard that once they get it, then they learn other signs really fast.

I also have a cousin who used it with all three of her boys. She loved it and recommended it to me. I would check out a few books at the library first to see what you like before you buy any. That's what I did. Then I found a book called "Baby Sign Language Basics" by Monta Briant. It has over 300 signs and a dvd. Good luck. Let us know how it works out for you.

  7. Well, from what I've seen and read most kids usually get as far as "more" and "eat". Evan learned those too, but he really just liked verbalizing himself more. He was a pretty early talker. He knew at least a dozen words before he was a year...hello, bye bye, ball, mama, dada, shoes, outside (he called Grandma Rowena that for a long time because she would take him outside whenever he wanted...haha) and even cake-cake which he said on his first birthday when he was eating his cake-cake! :-) He learned to put sentences together just a few months later too! It is definitely fun and beneficial to teach them anything! I am also not a parent who "hates" TV because Evan has learned so much from it! We LOVED shows on Noggin and PBS Kids and watched them together a lot when I stayed home with him! We even used them for "music" time with shows like "Jack's Big Music Show"! Check them out! :-)

  8. I think it sounds like fun, and it can help you know what your baby needs before she can verbalize it. It can help relieve frustration for both of you, from what I've heard from my friends. It doesn't delay speech development. It helps. Why not give it a try? She is such a cutie pie!
